Service learning: Visiting the Elderly Home
There is a breakthrough in our annual “Elderly Service”. Every Form 1 student is scheduled to visit the elderly home 3 times this year in order to build up a relationship with the elderly and give them their love and care. Before the 1st visit, students participated in a workshop to experience the feeling of being an elderly. They learned to be considerate and to show respect to the elderly. During the 1st visit, students were divided into groups and played Bingo with the elderly. The game was simple but it was challenging to play because most of the elderly have hearing problems. Students had to be patient and caring while playing the game. The elderly were happy and they appreciated students’ efforts in helping them win the game. Afterwards, students chatted with the elderly to understand their way of living in the elderly home. Students found the visit rewarding and meaningful. They plan to express their love and care by bringing a gift for the elderly in the upcoming visit. All of us are looking forward to the next reunion.
